The video is from Super Soul Sunday founded by Oprah Winfrey on OWN TV. She interviews Dr. Brené Brown on 6 types of people you should avoid confiding in. The six types of people you should avoid telling your shame story are taken from Dr. Brown’s new book, The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are.

Dr. Brown says, “Guilt is just as powerful, but its influence is positive, while shame’s is destructive. Shame erodes our courage and fuels disengagement.”

Who do you confide in when something shameful happens in your life? With whom do you share your story? Who are the people you feel that have earned the right to hear your shame story?

Watch this beautiful video to discover how to recover from shame and vulnerability.

Dr. Brown tells why it is so important to open yourself up only to those people who have earned the right to hear your story. She also tells what the 6 types of people you should avoid confiding in.

Enjoy:)

One of the types of people who do not deserve to hear your shame story is the friend who hears a story and actually feels shame for you. She gasps and confirms how horrified you should be and becomes silent. Then you have to make her feel better!

Another type of person is the one who responds with sympathy and feels sorry for you rather than empathy.

There are four other types of people who should not hear your story.

Dr. Brown says, “You share with people who earned the right to hear your story.” Oprah replies, “Damn – that is good!”

How do you tell what type of person your friend really is so that you can know in advance if it is okay to share your shame story with them?
