Facilitating and Leadership Styles

DICTATORIAL Calls for ideas but doesn't listen, squashes
suggestions, imposes own point of  view on
the group, is focused on his/her own agenda.
LAISSEZ-FAIRE Lets the group do at it chooses. Shows little interest, does not respond to suggestions, does not maintain order, does not resolve conflicts, does not help to reach decisions.
FACILITATIVE Listens to each speaker with concentration, sensitive to group needs, encourages whole group participation, helps get task completed, helps maintain good spirts with group.
Note Effective leadership/facilitation call for behavior appropriate to the specific situations in a group. For example, the facilitator may take charge to change the direction of conversation to bring it back to the topic at hand or suggest to an individually who may be dominating a conversation to refrain from speaking to allow other voices to be heard. In another situation a facilitator may allow a discussion to flow with no intervention because group members are participating and there is movement towards a group decision.
