Charlie Chaplin: We Need Kindness And Gentleness

This striking video features the final speech of Charlie Chaplin in the movie, “The Great Dictator.”

The scene from the movie is intermixed with scenes of soldiers and people gathering in large groups all over the world.

He espouses tolerance, and says, “More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness.”

The only thing that bothered me was at the very end when he said, “Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give youth a future and old age a security.”

The word, “fight” made me think of Gandhi’s famous quote, “An eye for and eye makes the whole world blind.”

I would have put it something like, “Let us join together in harmony…”
