Compassion And Altruism In Dogs

In my upcoming post on Meditation Practices, “Compassion Research Has Gone Mainstream,” I mention that “compassion and altruism are innate qualities that all people (and animals – see photo!) share.”

This video proves that dogs have compassion and act in altruistic ways.

When I was on retreat with Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh in Vancouver  during the summer of 2011, I heard a fabulous story of how a whale helped save the life of a 9 year old boy.

I don’t recall all of the details. Perhaps the boat ran out of fuel when the boy became ill and the whale jumped in and out of the water so the rescue team could help the family in the boat.

I’ll fill you in on the actual story when my friend responds to my email.

Do you know any stories about animals helping people or other animals?

If so, write about them in the comments and post photographs on my Facebook page.

I would love to hear from you!
