Dhamma Brothers Practice Vipassana Meditation

Last night, I watched a stirring movie about vipassana meditation in an Alabama Prison called The Dhamma Brothers.

Two vipassana meditation teachers, Bruce Stewart and Jonathan Crowley went to the Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer, Alabama to offer the 10 day vipassana course to a select group of  inmates.

The film consists of interviews with all the people involved: the inmates, the teachers, the guards, the prison administrators and the psychologist in charge of the Alabama Department of Corrections.

Each story is one that invokes compassion for the storyteller and their situation.

One of the most striking things about the program was that religious leaders in the prison turned against the Dhamma Brothers meeting for meditation after the 10 retreat ended and shut down their practice together.

They thought the whole prison was going to become Buddhist!

This was in 2002. Four years later, Crowley and Stewart returned again to teach the course.

The results have be remarkable.

I was revolted by the closed mindedness of the religious leaders in the prison.

They completely ignored and overlooked the progress that the Dhamma Brothers had made.

I highly recommend that you buy or rent the movie and watch The Dhamma Brothers. You can easily find it on Netflix.
