Hormone Tip from Sara Gottfried

This hormone tip from Sara Gottfired is really worth paying attention to. I’ve adapted this post from an email I received from her recently.

It turns out that gratitude is the secret sauce that gets your hormones back on track!

She is planning to send to me a few more of her brand new, secret tips and videos that will boost your happy hormones, shield you from stress, and reduce your cravings (so you lose weight effortlessly and get more lean). As I get them, it will make me happy and grateful to share them with you.

In the past 20 years of taking care of patients and working with women online, Dr. Sara has noticed that the grateful ones reset their hormones faster.

She shared this practice that didn’t fit in her book, The Hormone Cure: Reclaim Balance, Sleep, Sex Drive and Vitality Naturally with the Gottfried Protocol.

Ready for the Hormone Secret?

It’s a powerful way to turn the corner on feelings of stress and overwhelm – and start feeling happier and more positive – in 5 minutes or less.

It’s called What Went Well.

This simple exercise only takes 5 minutes – and when practiced for just one week, it has been shown to improve happiness up to 6 months later!

Her friend, Jo Ilfeld PhD, shared it with her because there’s robust research behind it. Since Jo and Dr. Sara are both working moms, they really appreciate how fast this practice accelerates your hormonal reset. Vishen Lakhiani of Mindvalley fame also shared something like this in The Power Of Gratitude.

Dr. Jo Ilfeld calls it a ‘happiness intervention,’ and it has its roots in Professor Martin Seligman’s work, the father of Positive Psychology, who can be found at the University of Pennsylvania.

Here are the 2 steps to the Hormone Secret:

  1. At the end of today, when you’re ready to go to bed, sit down with your journal, iPhone or any piece of paper. Write down 3 things that went well during your day and why. You might write that you had a nice visit with a girlfriend, or that you had fun singing the latest Macklemore song with your kid. Or the sun came out and you noticed how good it felt on your body. (Takes about 5 minutes.)
  2. Repeat this every night for one week. (Total investment: 35 minutes)

That’s it. Easy, right?

Here’s the cool part: the data from Professor Martin Seligman show that when you do this 5 minute practice for one week, it raises your happiness levels. And that happiness stays with you — people in his study were still happier 6 months later!

I often do this practice in bed before I fall asleep, and I certainly do the practice during my morning meditation. I don’t use a journal because the gratitude practice is part of my daily meditation.

So… what went well today?
