A Little Kindness Goes a Long Way

A new trend in kindness is beginning to happen at some of the strangest places in the United States and the European Union. Random people are showing how a little kindness goes a long way. They are paying for peoples’ groceries at the checkout counter.

The Dalai Lama once said,

“When we feel love and kindness toward others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace.”

And Albert Einstein chimed in with this quote:

“A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”

Kristin Neff, Ph. D., has written in her book, Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being, that what people look for in a relationship more than anything else is kindness. I can vouch for this because I met a very kind woman forty years ago and have been with her for the past 36 years. She is my wife, Mala and she is extremely kind to me, our children, our friends, and the grocer. I admire her for her acts of kindness.

What little kindness are you prepared to do today? What little act of kindness will you do tomorrow? Next week? Next month? Next year? Please tell me what you will do, but please don’t wait.
