Meditation Practices for Parkinson’s Disease

Meditation practices for Parkinson’s disease are being presented in a symposium featuring  Dr. Joe Jackson, brother of basketball coach, Phil Jackson. Dr. Jackson is a clinical psychologist now living in Virginia.

The symposium is taking place in Kalispell, Montana on Friday, April, 27, 2012.

Dr. Jackson, himself, has a mild form of the disease, even though he is still active and tries to exercise frequently.

My cousin suffers from a sever form of the disease and it makes me feel compassion for her suffering. As of now, she is unable to walk and constantly shakes. The last time I visited her, I could see how far the disease had progressed. She has been a frequent contributor to the Senior Women Weband has been an advocate for the elderly.

Meditation Practices for Parkinson’s Disease

Dr. Jackson developed his meditation practices for Parkinson’s disease because it helped him deal with his own illness.

He developed his stress-reduction program based on meditative techniques for mindfulness popularized by Jon Kabat-Zinn.

“Because most stress comes from worry about the future or worry about the past, we need to learn to live in the moment,” he said.

More here.

The meditation practices he teaches include body scanning, yoga postures and mindfulness of breathing. These practices have given him a sense of inner peace.

Perhaps I could have helped my cousin if she still lived in the San Francisco Bay Area. I would have invited her to my Mindfulness in Healing class and given her one-on-one instructions.

This post is dedicated to cousin Betty. May she be well and happy.
