The Dalai Lama Learns Quantum Theory

This video was recorded during the fourteenth meeting of the Mind and Life Institute. In it, the Dalai Lama learns quantum theory.

In this session, noted physicist, Anton Zeilinger, who had been with the Dalai Lama at previous Mind and Life conferences, updated His Holiness on the latest research since their prior meeting nine years before.

He opens with the profound statement, “Maybe knowledge is as fundamental, or even more fundamental than [material] reality.”

He then explains the double slit experiment which gives rise to the wave-particle duality.

One of the observations was “No phenomenon is a phenomenon unless it is an observed phenomenon” – Neils Bohr.

Matthieu Ricard, a well-know Buddhist teacher, said that this statement agrees with Buddhism.

By the way, Dr. Richie Davidson was at the meeting.

Are you confused by this conversation about the double slit experience?

Share your questions and comments below and I may be able to answer them. After all, I spent six years in graduate school in physics.

The Dalai Lama’s book, The Universe in a Single Atom: The Convergence of Science and Spirituality came out of these discussions. The Dalai Lama highlights what he considers to be the most significant points where science and spirituality converge.

Galileo, Copernicus, Newton, Niels Bohr, Einstein. Their insights shook our perception of who we are and where we stand in the world, and in their wake have left an uneasy coexistence: science vs. religion, faith vs. empirical inquiry. Which is the k… [Read More…]

I have listened to the book on CD about half a dozen time. It is read by Richard Gere.
