The Dalai Lama Speaks On Unbiased Compassion

Here is another short video in which the Dalai Lama speaks on unbiased compassion. It is an excerpt of a longer conversation that the Dalai Lama had with Thai Buddhists at his residence in Dharamsala, India, on March 15th, 2011.

The compassionate sense of concern for the well-being of one’s own friend – those people who really show to you positive regard which you, in turn, return – is biased. It is very much involved with attachment.

He says, “As soon as attachment is developed, that’s an unrealistic attitude, and the biased limited attachment often brings hatred… So the compassion we want to promote is unbiased compassion.” This is compassion developed for people we are close to, and also to our enemies.

Unbiased compassion not oriented towards the action of others, and recognizes that they also want and have the genuine right to seek happiness and avoid suffering helps us develop a genuine sense of concern.

The Dalai Lama’s idea of unbiased compassion is reflected in his attitude towards the Chinese government who took over his homeland of Tibet. He does no feel hatred towards the Chinese and want to work out an autonomous regional government in Tibet.
