The Story of Ashoka

This video tells the story of Ashoka. Ashoka was an Indian emperor of the Maurya Dynasty.

He ruled over most of the Indian subcontinent from 269 BC to 232 BC.

His massive empire stretched from present-day Pakistan, Afghanistan in the west, to the present-day Bangladesh and the Indian state of Assam in the east.

His southern influence stretched as far south as northern Kerala and Andhra.

After a war in which he conquered another kingdom, he was astonished by how much death and suffering he had caused.

He adopted Buddhism and never used force again.

He built stupas (large pillars) with the text of his edicts all emphasizing the teachings of Buddha: non-violence, vegetarianism, love, truth, and tolerance.

Here is an emperor who regretted the suffering caused by his conquests. He was able to turn his life around.

What happened in your life to turn it around?

Please share your story.
