The Willpower Instinct by Kelly McGonigal

Kelly McGonigal, Ph. D., is a health psychologist at Stanford University and a senior teacher at The Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education.

In this entertaining video, Dr. McGonigal discusses her book, “The Willpower Instinct: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do to Get More of It” at the Capitola Book Cafe in Capitola, CA.

She goes into some of the studies on willpower and then some practical applications of what she has learned.

It seems that when people are confronted any of their addictions, indulging only makes matters worse.

For example, if you are addicted to chocolate and consume a cookie, you are more likely to also consume a chocolate bar if one is available.

One strategy for dealing with these kinds of issues is self-compassion. It is also very important to take care of yourself and your body.

Another strategy is to use mindfulness to notice what is going on in your body and accept that you may not be able to control your feelings, but you can control your actions.

I think Kelly McGonigal is destined for greatness. Her speaking ability is exceptional. She is clear and coherent. I saw her speak in San Francisco with Jon Kabat-Zinn on January 9, 2013. I introduced myself after the talk and she was very friendly.

What did you feel when you watched this video? Do you manage your willpower instinct well?

The WillPower Instinct by Kelly McGonigal is a very readable book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you the video on this page, you can get even more out of reading her book.
