I was sure that my life was going to be awesome (or at the very least, my paycheck was). Unfortunately, my age and inexperience made my life miserable. I had opted out of graduate school without my Ph. D, and I was programming a small computer for those days for a major pharmaceutical company. Although I liked the work, I was really unhappy in my life.

After a few years of moving around, teaching at a junior college, doing minor consulting gigs, and going nowhere fast, I landed a nice paying job with profitable computer company. I wasn’t happy there either and starting fooling around with personal computers. After a while I quit my job to go off on my own.

Soon, I was approached by a friend of my landlord who said, “If you could write the program, I can sell a $1,000,000 worth!” We were going to have the next big software company until thousands of dollars, 2 years of time, and countless 100 hour work weeks went by with absolutely nothing to show for it.

To make matters worse, my partner took some proprietary software and squirreled it away to another venture he started. This led to a big law suite just about the time my wife was giving birth to our daughter. As bleak as that was, I managed to come out whole (financially, at least) and I still have a most of it socked away.

By this time, I had a beautiful wife (at least that part of my plan worked out) and three amazing kids. They were depending on me, as a partner, as a provider, and as a parent… and I knew I was letting them down across the board.

I felt like the walls were closing in on me. My kids constantly complained that I never had enough time for them, and as I’m sure you can imagine, none of that that did any wonders for my relationship with my wife. One argument led to another, and another, and another, and it wasn’t looking good for us. I really couldn’t blame her either.

If we continued down the same path we were on, we were going to end up scheduling visitation instead of dates, working out alimony payments instead of planning our retirement, and posting profiles on dating sites for single parents instead of looking for the beaches to visit on vacation.

It made me wonder, or worry might be a better way to put it, if I’d done the wrong thing. Should I have stuck with my job, sucked it up, and put in the time to work my way up the corporate ranks like I’d originally planned?

After the software company failure, I managed to find jobs with high-profile companies. I still hated them, but I was wiser now and was willing to put up with the challenge — even if it meant continuing to code.

Still, those sleepless nights wouldn’t go away. I’d single-handedly put us deep in debt and had no idea how to get us back out. I didn’t know how to be the best husband and father I could be. I was at rock bottom, I wasn’t doing anything very well, and I knew it…

Then, as if it wasn’t bad enough already, the yearly checkup confirmed everything I’d been feeling my body telling me. I was trying my best to hide the heartburn, headaches, and fatigue from everyone around me, but the numbers on those tests didn’t help.

My health was going downhill, and it was going fast. I wasn’t sleeping, my blood pressure was high (pretty bad for a young guy), and I wasn’t performing anywhere close to capacity. My bosses always had an excuse to put me on the reduction in force lists..

And I could tell my wife wasn’t too far behind. She was getting sick of me too.

The turning point…

One day, completely out of the blue, I noticed an old book about meditation gathering dust in our bookshelf. I told myself to read the book in case it would give me a chance to recover.


“Meditation,” was the subject of the book and I would have to admit that any hungry dog looking for a bone would have a much easier time than I did when it came to reading the book.
