Meditation Practices: How Do They Affect The Brain?

This Google Talk by Dr. Philippe Goldin of Stanford University is titled, “Cognitive Neuroscience of Mindfulness Meditation.” It is about meditation practices: how do they affect the brain?

Dr. Goldin spent six years in India and Nepal studying meditation and languages.

In his talk, he examined the effect of mindfulness meditation practice on brain function.

He listed three basic types of meditation: concentration, analytic and emptiness. The first two types lead to the third.

I have practiced many of the several forms of meditation mentioned in the video including mindfulness of breathing and bodily sensations, creative visualizations, mantra repetition, contemplation of various forms, and loving-kindness meditation.

I encourage you to pay attention to the scientific evidence presented in this video and take up a daily meditation practice.
