Taking Action For The Benefit Of All Beings

Bhikkhu Bodhi, in discussion with famed activist, Joanna Macy and Pannavati Karuna, talked about taking action for the benefit of all beings. The discussion took place at an event for the benefit of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship in Berkeley, California.

Of these three venerables, perhaps Joanna Macy is best known. I have heard her speak a couple of times and admired her way of capturing the audience. For example, she spoke my sister’s graduation from the California Institute of Integral Studies. She has been involved in political and social issues for decades. She is one of the most poignant proponents and models of engaged Buddhism.

I don’t know much about Pannavati Karuna, other than what I read in a Tricycle interview from the summer of 2011. She is the Co-Abbot, Embracing Simplicity Hermitage; Founder of My Place in Hendersonville, North Carolina. She grew up as a Baptist Christian and ordained in the Thai Forest tradition.

The real focus of my attention in this video was on Bhikkhu Bodhi, whose writings in many different Buddhist magazines have always touched my heart and sense of mindfulness. His way of expressing the dharma keeps me looking for more.

It must be that he was born Jeffrey Block to Jewish parents. He is a JewBu, just like me.

Bhikkhu Bodhi’s thoughts on global warming are deeply connected with many previous articles. For example, take a look at Is Global Warming Real?, Three Numbers You Should Know About Global Warming, and Are You Playing Genetic Roulette?

The discussion proceeded along the lines of global warming, poverty, enabling women around the world to reduce the level of poverty, compassion, and other subjects. It is worth watching more than once.

What action are you willing to take for the benefit of all beings? Please share your plan.
