The Art Of Suffering

Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh gave a dharma talk on Sunday, March 10  in Plum Village, France in Upper Hamlet.

The topic of his talk was the art of suffering.

He said that we have many books on the art of happiness and we need a book on the art of suffering.

We know that we cannot avoid suffering. In order to realize the happiness that we seek, we must understand and embrace our suffering.

If you know how to suffer, you will suffer less.

He says that healing is possible if we can stop, walk and breathe. Healing is possible if we stop the kind of actions and thinking that create ill-being and sickness.

“There is no way to healing, healing is the way!”

The Five Mindfulness Trainings can help us relieve our suffering. They have the power to heal.

We can also tune into our body to calm the non-stop thinking and heal our bodies.

One of the practices that you can do to embrace your suffering is to find moments of happiness throughout the day.

For example, as you walk from your car to your work, notice the people and the flowers instead of beginning your work for the day.

Another example is to walk mindfully, taking care to notice each step.

Continue this when you walk to the water cooler or grab a cup of tea.

Can you create a moment of happiness right now? What would you right now? Please share your feelings and thoughts.
