Investigate Alternatives

The second of the Seven Principles of Mindfulness in Healing from the book, Healing with the Seven Principles of Mindfulness is to investigate alternatives. Here is why.

When most people hear the words, “You’ve got cancer,” they follow the standard medical treatment of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and drugs. The exceptional people become their own advocates for healthcare and, among other things, investigate alternatives. Alternatives refer to alternative medical practices that are outside the box of western medicine. They are used to complement western medicine not to replace it. Alternative medicine can add a degree of healing that could actually make the difference between a complete recovery and a chronic condition.

What alternatives are there and how do they help? Most alternative medical treatments are derived from medical practices that were in existence prior to the influx of designer drugs to cure everything. Many of them are centuries if not millennia years old. For example, Ayurvedic medicine dates back to around the seventh or sixth century BCE. Around 400 CE the Ayurveda writings were translated into Chinese and from these writings, Buddhism and the Chinese use of herbs, acupuncture and Chinese medicine developed. Ayurveda, acupuncture and Chinese medicine were the common medical practices of India and China for centuries. People were cured back then with these practices and they still can work wonders in many cases today.

Other kinds of alternative medicine include homeopathy, chiropractic, faith healing, shamanism, body work, guided imagery, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, medical marijuana, and a whole slough of suppressed cancer cures. What kind of alternative therapy is good for you depends on your diagnosis, treatment plan, and your choice of alternative practices. It is best to consult a qualified practitioner who knows something about your illness and a lot about the various choices you can make.
