I just saw the documentary film, One Track Heart: The Story of Krishna Das. There was a line in the movie that was so funny I had to use it as the title of this blog post. Someone in Denmark said of him, “He’s just and American hamburger with Indian ketchup!” This caught my attention and sense of humor.
Krishna Das was born Jeffrey Kagel in 1947. He went to India and found his guru, Neem Karoli Baba, who is also the guru of Baba Ram Dass (Dr. Richard Alpert).
Since about 1996, he has become the most famous singer of Indian devotional music know as kirtan. I have loved kirtan since my first exposure to it in the 1970’s.
Four of the people who appear in the video with Krishna Das are Ram Dass, Lama Surya Das, Sharon Salzberg, and Daniel Goleman. These are all names of people who have a presence on Meditation Practices.
Here is the official trailer of One track Heart.
Krishna Das’ big question was how could he serve Neem Karoli Baba after leaving him in India. His answer was, “I will sing to you in America!”
So sing he does.
