Make Health-Promoting Lifestyle Changes

The third of the Seven Principles of Mindfulness in Healing from the book, Healing with the Seven Principles of Mindfulness is to make health-promoting lifestyle changes. Here is why.

Silva LIfe SystemLong before my first diagnosis of muscle invasive bladder cancer in 1997, I learned that making health-promoting lifestyle changes was really important from Dr. Dean Ornish, MD. He gave a talk about how heart attack patients were reversing their heart disease by adopting a vegetarian diet, daily exercise, and group therapy. What he said stuck with me and I adopted this philosophy to healing my cancer.

One of things that you can do right away, even if you don’t have cancer, is to stop drinking any kind of soft drinks such as diet or regular cola. These products have a disastrous effect on your immune system and your brain, especially diet drinks. Cutting down on meat is also a good thing. If you eat meat, try to obtain meat from organically raised cattle or chicken and eat it in moderation.

Another thing that you can do is to exercise at least five times a week. A simple half-hour walk outside can do the trick. This is what I did during my second episode of bladder cancer last year. Walking is a great exercise, especially if you don’t drag your anxieties, worries, or fears along with you as you walk.
