In this video, Dr. Maya Angelou speaks on the liberating quality of love. I believe this was on Oprah Winfrey‘s Master Class, but I’m not sure. If you find out, please let me know.
She spoke about the time when her mother was dying. She says that “Love liberates:”
I am grateful to have been loved and to be loved now and to be able to love, because that liberates. Love liberates. It doesn’t just hold—that’s ego. Love liberates. It doesn’t bind. Love says, ‘I love you. I love you if you’re in China. I love you if you’re across town. I love you if you’re in Harlem. I love you. I would like to be near you. I’d like to have your arms around me. I’d like to hear your voice in my ear. But that’s not possible now, so I love you. Go.
What are you thoughts about the liberating quality of love? Do you have the love you need in your life? If not, begin with this loving kindness prayer for yourself:
I am safe from internal and external harm.
I have a calm, clear mind and a peaceful, loving heart.
I am strong, healthy, and vital.
I experience love, joy, wonder, and wisdom in this life, just as it is.
Repeat it at least three times a day for 21 days and it will become a habit. I use it sometimes on the tennis court when I’m feeling anxious about an upcoming point. It really helps.
