What makes you happy? Hanging out with friends? Eating good food? Making a lot of money? Traveling to exotic places?
Scientists have found out that one of the greatest contributing factors to overall happiness in your life is how much gratitude you show.
The science of happiness shows us that happiness can increase by 4 to 19 percent by expressing gratitude to someone who has really influenced our lives.
You may want to try this mindfulness practice on a daily basis to increase your experience of gratitude. I know it works because I do it every day as part of my morning meditation.
Lie down in a comfortable position flat on your back.
Breathe in and out deeply and completely into and out of your belly at least six times. Let the out breath be a letting go type of breath.
Now place your attention on the top of your head and invite it to relax.
Move on down to your forehead and invite it to relax.
Next, relax your eyebrows, eyelids, and eyes.
Say in your mind, “I am happy and grateful now that I have eyes in good condition which allow me to see the wonders of life.”
Mentally move down to your cheeks and nostrils and invite them to relax completely and deeply.
Then say in your mind, “I am happy and grateful now that I have a nose in good condition to smell the odors that support life.”
Now feel your two lips touching and invite them to relax. You can say to your lips, “I am happy and grateful now that I have two lips that touch each other and I can feel bodily sensations in other parts of my body.”
Next, feel your tongue in your mouth and say to yourself, “I am happy and grateful now that I have a tongue in good condition to taste food and talk with loving speech.”
Relax your chin and jaws. Relax your ears. Say to your self, “I am happy and grateful now that I have ears that hear the sounds of the world.”
Continue with relaxing your head and face with these words, “Relax. Let go. Breath.” Repeat three times.
Now carry on with the rest of your morning practice!
