Eight Ideas About Mindful Weight Loss

Mindful Weight Loss

Weight Loss Guided Meditation

A few days ago, I wrote about how mindful consumption can help us rejoice in what we do have. In today’s article, I want to expand a bit on on mindful consumption and how it applies to mindful weight loss.

Mindful consumption is one of the core teachings of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and one of the most important topics on this website.

When we consume mindfully, we are careful to cultivate good health, physically and mentally, for ourselves and our society.

We are also mindful about how we use up the finite resources of planet earth.

It is safe to say that mindful eating can certainly promote weight loss.

We all know that being overweight is uncomfortable and it has reached epidemic proportions.

Mindful eating and mindful weight loss incorporate the following activities:

  1. Find an exercise program that you can stick with. Make sure you do it at least for 21 days in a row. This will instill habit energy in your exercise program. I recommend tennis, walking, yoga, pilates, and the Arica  psychocalisthenics.
  2. Plan a healthy diet around organic fruits and vegetables. Fish, poultry, and meat are certainly OK in moderation.
  3. Completely avoid soft drinks and liquor. Artificially sweetened beverages give the brain a signal that real sugar is coming, but it never does. This causes deleterious effects on your brain and body. I recommend even abstaining from all alcoholic beverages.
  4. If you must have sweets, try only 70% chocolate.
  5. When you eat, chew your food up to thirty times before swallowing. This will cause you to eat less and enjoy it more.
  6. While you are chewing, put your fork or sandwich down on your plate until you finish your current bite of food. Remembering to do this will cut down on the urgency of eating and will help you recognize your body’s signal that you are satiated earlier and easier.
  7. Swear off of commercial television, especially the shows that advertise unhealthy food for profit and drug companies who warn you that you may die from taking their drugs.
  8. Practice meditation, especially the weight loss guided meditation daily. This will calm you body and mind so that you can easily achieve your mindful weight loss goals. I will be your coach and guide.

I have to confess that I have never had an overweight problem ever in my life. Whenever I feel the least bit uncomfortable with my weight, I remind myself of these eight ideas about mindful weight loss and sometimes skip lunch or dinner.

My daily practice consists of early morning meditation, sometimes followed by sound meditations (binaural beats), Arica psychocalisthenics, and a hearty breakfast (homemade granola with chia seeds, berries, chocolate chips, and raw whole or almond milk with tea). I play tennis for an hour and a half at least four times a week. I also teach Mindfulness in Healing on Wednesday nights.

Having the body that you want is a matter of the right mindset, which you can obtain from the weight loss guided meditation and a willingness to change.
