Develop Your Own Path

The Buddha provided us with a wonderful eightfold path for us to discover our true nature and become enlightened. While this path worked for the Buddha and it would work for you, provided that you are diligent, you may still have to develop your own path.

Michael Ray has an interesting idea about developing your own path. He writes,

We Make the Path by Walking It“The key is to do what works for you so that you begin to develop your own path. You don’t reject the people and traditions of your early life; rather, you begin to develop your own tradition and work with your own teachers.

“This is a lifelong journey—no matter how old you are, this process of finding what works and discovering your path gives your life meaning. You continually develop your understanding of your relationship to the highest goal. By creating from your highest goal and living on your path toward it, you inspire others. And this becomes your greatest legacy.”

Michael Ray from The Highest Goal: The Secret That Sustains You in Every Moment

Michael Ray says that we don’t reject the traditions of our earlier life. This is similar to the teachings of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. He encourages us to consider returning to our family tradition, but to do so with mindfulness.

Ray also tells us that developing your own path gives your life meaning. We have seen many articles on the theme of making the path by walking it. See, for example, We Make the Path by Walking It. This is how we develop our own path.

What is your path and how do you walk it?
