It Takes a World to Raise a Child

After a long delay, we finally have words of wisdom again from Lama Surya Das. They are about how it takes a world to raise a child now.

When my girls were little, they attended a Montessori school from the time they were toddlers through eighth grade. The parents, teacher, and administrators at the school formed the village that raised them.

They celebrated Earth Day and learned to respect all life. They even learned a little about interbeing – the interconnectedness of all things, which is why it takes a world to raise a child.

Words of Wisdom from Lama Surya Das

“It used to take a woman to raise a child etc., and then it took a village; now it seems to me it takes a city, a culture, a whole world to wholly raise the whole. Shall we together start?”

Lama Surya Das, Lexington High School speech, Massachusetts

Lama Surya Das

We are all Buddhas by nature–we only have to awaken and recognize who we are and how we fit perfectly in this world. This is the teaching of the innate Great Perfection–Dzogchen. Introducing us to this natural wisdom and compassion is the life-work of Lama Surya Das.
